Speedometer Question
« on: April 29, 2016, 19:18:17 »
I have a 71 280SE 3.5 which had a 3.69 rear differential which I changed to a 3.27 from a 280SE 4.5.
Now the speedometer reads low along with the odometer.
Instead of having the speedometer re-calibrated could I install a speedometer from a 280SE 4.5
which should correct the problem. My understanding is Mercedes calibrated the speedometer to the
rear differential ratio. I guess I could just live with it, but I'd rather not.
Comments, suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Have you talked to North Hollywood Speedometer? They specialize in VDO work on classic cars, they might be able to recalibrate it.

Good luck,

The 3.5 coupe has gauges like a 113 and the 4.5 has 108 gauges which are not the same at all. It may be that parts are interchangeable.

The correct ratio should be  (inkt) stamped on the back of the gauge ...........
