Gas cap

Gurus:
I apologize for asking an incredibly dumb question. I've owned SL models since 1986......and still own the 560SL ( with 262 total miles).
I just become the owner of a 1968 250SL.
The dumb question of the week: The gas cap locks( and doesn't rotate), I unlock the cap and it rotates freely but doesn't come off. The cap came off when the car was being unloaded from the trailer as the seller demonstrated the keys.
Help......what am I missing? Do I win something for winning the "Dumb Question of the week"?
Thank you in advance for entertaining this silly question.

That is not a dumb questions, . The gas cap when locked spins freely. When you unlock it it then can sometimes be really hard to turn and remove as is the case on my car. I suspect you have not tried hard enough to get it off when it is unlocked.

Mike,
When you do manage to remove it, smear some vaselene on the gaskett in the cap every so often, this helps with easier operation.
Also check that the rubber boot on the pipe does not contact the cap.
Keep well
