Intermittent loss of drive in transmission
« on: March 06, 2017, 15:40:15 »
hello, I'm Miles Pinniger, a new member with a newly acquired 280SL auto 1969 U.S. Spec. The car wasUu delivered on a transporter & drove off normally, but within 3 miles where I entered a strip mall with large speed bumps. I drove slowly over one when there was a big noise from the rear and I lost all transmission . Engaging/disengaging D or R had the same result - a horrible gnashing of gears. Recovered the car by transporter to a local workshop, where it started and drove normally. Later on a short road test the same occurred and we again had to recover it . Jacking up the rear on the diff, engaging D or R gently, the gearbox appears normal , propshaft rotating, drivers' side wheel not turning but passenger side is.
Looking underneath the car there appears to have been recent work done on the rear transmission , a new UJ boot & clips on passenger side, evidence of radius arms being removed & replaced with new bolts etc but I have no history file. Is it possible there's been something like a circlip or pin left out of a recent re-assembly? Any ideas please? Thank you, Miles P

It sounds like somthing internal in the differential. Possibly the pinion preload not set correctly when reassembled or a stripped out spline on one of the axles or the slip joint. The fact it happened over a bump points more twards an axle issue.
