Varta/ Pagoda 55Ah battery part number?....
« on: March 18, 2013, 23:11:22 »
Does anyone know exactly what the Varta part number was on a new Pagoda battery? I'm trying to re-manufactur the stickers and despite all the literature and pictures I've collected, I still can make out the number. It was very likely a 5 digit number, possibly starting with 55 (for 55 Ah). Something like this: 555 11.
Free stickers to the guy who helps with this or any other sticker/ stamp job that you might want. I know there are sources for some stickers out there, but those that know me, also know that I am very particular on these sort of things and nothing short of an exact copy of the original seems worth doing...

I have a guy who is thinking about making original batteries - not sure if this has been done before but I know he will want the correct decal. MP if you have an interest in this project.

  On an unrealted subject:

hs anyone ever made the decal for the top on the power steering tank? I looks like it was painted on possibly with a rubber stamp.

I have a pair of these stickers, I don't know if they are duplicates of the original.

Tom,

I know we have passed pictures and talked about the original Varta batteries in the past but I guess I didn't send all of my pictures to you. Do these work for you?

Great photos, but you do realize the battery hold-down does nothing unless the fore/aft affixing j-rods are there... ;)

Hi

Thanks for all your input. The pictures are unfortunately not of a sticker that was found on a Pagoda, nor is the battery for that matter, although it is close. The original had the design of vertical lines shown in the casing below, but the cell were tied to one another and the black top enclosed those ties, as opposed to the open ties in some of the contemporary MB cars. Reproductions of these battery casing were available until recently from a manufacturer in South Africa, but I would be very happy to find someone who is willing to start making them again. Unfortunately, this is the best picture I have of an original battery and sticker in a Pagoda. Does anyone have the ability to enhance the picture in order to be able to read the part number easier? It is not 518 11 :-) You'll get free stickers for you efforts.

I just tried to download a high resolution photo, so people can zoom in to see the battery sticker, but unfortunately the picture is too large for this site. Please email me, if can help with enhancing the image and I will send it to you.

Thanks, Tom Colitt

280 SEs (W108) and other Pagodas (W113) never had batteries with open cell connectors between the six cells.
Always encapsulated.
See 49er's engines after delivery.

Hard to say what is inscribed on those Varta labels ....

Could be my eye but the sticker looks to be the same as the one on John's original photo.

BTW - attached is the battery I purchased from Vintage Auto Batteries. I based it on John's photo from the other angle which showed the yellow caps. It fits the original top frame perfectly.

The only catch is that it is too high (being a maintenance free battery inside a false case) and you need to lower the battery base frame to fit - as my project car will be totally stripped it is worth doing.

I threw a plain rectangular Varta sticker on my other car battery - but would love to have this circular one if someone is reproducing them
