static 3 points seatbelts
« on: March 05, 2017, 09:29:37 »
Hello,

I'd like to replace the seatbelts of my '69 SL.
With some static devices as well as I don't want to loose any centimeter of seat travel nor like the idea of butchering the upholstery.
So my questions are:
- did one of you recently renew his (her!) static seat belts, if so which brand /model?
- more accurately about the buckle: some websites recommend a 30cm buckle, which sounds way too long for me, you'd have the buckle on the belly with the mounting point so high on the tunnel. Did anyone test a 15cm buckle or would it foul the wooden box on the tunnel?

By the way, I've found the Securon products, which do not look very period and suggest a 30cm buckle: http://www.securon.co.uk/applications/app_list/jtom/seat_belts_merc.htm; http://www.securon.co.uk/seatbelts_layouts.htm

In France, we also have this website which offers exactly what I do not want! http://www.ceintures-de-securite.com/montage-pagode.php

So suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Didier

Several of us on here have had a great experience with http://www.fdts-seatbelts.co.uk/ - speak to Sue. She knows her stuff

That said, as a matter of personal safety, I think there's a reason that manufacturers went from static to inertia reel and your three point belt mountings would be the same as for a reel

Hello Didier
I just bought a pair of new seat belts from http://www.ssnake-oyl.com/ which is located in Texas. I chose the "2-Point Non-Retractable 60 inch Lap Belt w/Chrome Lift Latch" because it seemed like the most neutral option and because, really, they are inexpensive. I ordered on the website, then called to talk about shipping. They arrived in a few short days, without extra charges, which is always a happy surprise for us in Canada.

Although I like 3-point belts for a modern car, I decided against them for the Pagoda because (a) I don't have headrests, (b) I'm a tall guy and the shoulder harness would have to go way up and over, (c) I'm not sure I like the idea of adding the mounting points in the pillar behind the door. Also, I agree with you about the stalk-type: they just don't suit the look & feel of a Pagoda.

I tried really hard to find new-reproduction Kangol or Schefenacker belts, but everything I found was really expensive, not brand new or not the style that I liked.

Just out of curiosity: What does the forum think about the original Kangol seat belts? It is what I use. They are softer than modern ones and do not retract but they hold you in-place very well.

I bought a refurbished Kangol seatbelt set from Authentic Classics, and couldn't be happier. They are the perfect complement to my new seat leather. They were VERY expensive, but well worth the expense since they look perfect.
Greetings from sunny Mexico!

Hello,

And thanks a lot to you all for your quick answers, I'll try ftds and ssnake.
By the way my car came with Klippan seat belts, which are period but certainly not original.
I may also try to renew the webbing but currently no idea where I could have that done. Let's see anyway.

Didier.
