US vs. Euro Steering Wheels

Here's a good side-by-side closeup of a steering wheel from a US-spec 280 SL next to a steering wheel from a European-spec 280 SL. Note the horn ring and how the Euro model is chromed, whereas the US model has a non-reflective surface:

Europeans definitely got a fancier product -- those glass headlights, more substantial map pockets in the doors, the chromed horn ring and rear view mirror neck, etc.

Yes, the Euro car is May & the US car is February. Both 1970.

Douglas,
The US horn ring is matted because of safety reasons. No reflection of sun light. It is very easy to change a US spec horn ring in a Euro one. If you can get one, mount it and your car is a bit fancier than before.

I do not wish to brag I opted for the chrome wiper arms & blade holders and the chrome horn ring on my 280SL. Now I know it is wrong because I have a silver neck mirror. If I put a chrome rear view mirror in does this make it a Europen SL?

I mounted a chrome horn ring because it is - seen from the inside - more in harmony with the dash doors (chrome parts). I wouldn't change the matted wiper arms & blade holders and rear view mirror as they are - seen from the outside - in harmony with the wind shield rim.
