1990 MB G-wagon possible purchase

Am I crazy to consider buying a euro 1990 G300 gas that was converted to an MB turbo diesel OM606 with the 5 speed trans added too?
It has 150K+ miles on the car and was imported to the US under an historic vehicle exemption ( over 25 yrs old).

The conversion was done by Diesel Pump UK, a British specialist that does a lot of diesel conversions. Their website is very impressive.
We all know that OM 606 is superb engine and I love the idea of a diesel G. Seller says the engine and injection pump has been tweeked to put out 300 HP!

Am I just asking for trouble on this?
And for about the same dollars I can get a US 2007 G500 with all the modern improvements- 7 spd trans etc.
But this would be unique in the US for sure.

If any UK member knows of Diesel Pump UK and their reputation and longevity etc. I would appreciate any comments too.

I cannot comment as to the reliability but that model G-Wagon is on my car bucket list.  Love the lines and the testosterone of it without it being obnoxious.   All the G-Wagons  I have seen that I can afford are rust buckets. And this one with extra HP , i envy you.

That is how I feel too Bob.
1990 was the first year G with the W463 chassis that has upscale interiors. This one is 5 door and has leather seating and door panels too.
I am concerned about the engine/trans swap though.

I have 300GE, short, 1991 and a G55 AMG, 1998, which is earlier version of the G500 you talk about (my car has M113 engine without compressor, 5.5l, AMG modified).

I am not sure what is your experience so far with G-class.

In essence: the choice depends on your personal preferences and on what you need the car for. For off-road - short version, diesel. For every day - long version gas. For long trips - long version diesel (in G500 you will make max 400km on one tank). It will always be noisy at speed as it has aerodynamics of a 3-door closet (which is what i like about it). At 55mph is not noisy yet. at 80-90mph it will be. G-class diesel will always be a bit rough. I have recently been driving a new G350 - a bit rough. I have an ML with the same engine - it runs like a silk. But maybe you like it rough. The only nice thing about diesel is the high torque at low revs and range at moderate speeds - 1000km if you are careful.

I do not know the company you mentioned. But I know G-class is easy to swap engines and gear boxes. I saw many well done cars in the dodgy garages of G-class mechanics (special species in my country). But if you like G-class diesel, why don't you look for an original one? Please note that often engines for G-class differ from the same engines used for passenger cars. This may be, however, important while off-road driving only (I am not sure) - electric components installed higher, different oil pan for steep climbs and descents etc. Not sure what version is installed in the car you are talking about. Gear boxes may differ too, I am not sure.

When driving/looking at it - pay attention to vibration (it has 3 shafts, 6 joints, 3 differentials, one inside the transfer case - they can get messy). Look at overall drive train condition - it is a lot of parts, all expensive. Pay ttention to noises from transfer case and from differentials. Make sure the elctrohydraulics locking the differentials work - difficult to fix and they get stuck if people do not use them from time to time. You may not be able to lock a differrential also if the axel is bent after som ecollision. To lock a differential you may need to drive for some meters and turn the steering wheel - the locking mechanism may require the wheels turning at different speeds for a moment to engage. Press the buttons in proper order (center, rear, front), otherwise they will not engage. Pay attention if steering box is not leaking - not everybody can fix it and even the second hand one is expensive. Pay attention if sliding roof works - very hard to get good used brackets and new ones are expensive (do not ask me how I know it, e.g. for W124 you will have hundreds of them, for W463 they are rare, they look alike, but they are different). Pay attention if low range engages in the 2007 car - same reason for being stuck as differential locks. For 1990 car it does not matter.

Wheel rims that fit G-class are G-class rims. Others do not fit. Some say Sprinter rims also fit, I am not sure.

Make sure the geometry is ok - the car has a frame, it helps if it is straight. Make sure the condition of the frame is ok and VIN is clear and visible (right wheel arch, stamped on the frame). Rust appears on the front floors (raise the carpets), rocker panels, windshield frame area (clogged drains) and in the inner spaces above the rear plastic wheel housing. Sometimes you see it coming out around rear lamps. Rear panel door gets rusty too. Make sure this door sits properly, otherwise it makes lots of noise.

These are top of mind thoughts. Sorry if you know all this.

Thank you Pawel. Much appreciated. I don't know this level of detail and I thank you for it.
I would only use the G for weekend use at home where we have many nice 45 mph hilly roads and open spaces, no hi speed or long distance driving.
I have a 113, a 107 and my DD is an 2015 ML 250 bluetec (a superb driving car!) plus some MB beaters that my kids drive. I just love old MB's.

The engine and 5 spd trans that was installed out of a  1999 E300 Turbodiesel  sedan.
My mechanic friend says this G is only worth maybe 20-25K US and for the 35K the seller is asking I could get an 08 G - a much newer car.

But I am sure having fun investigating!
Nothing like hunting for an MB!

You and another colleague mentioned high prices of the Gclass in the US. I wonder what they are compared to Europe. Here the price depends more on the condition of the car rather than exactly a year or mileage. My 300GE, 1991, 260k km, no leather, no air condition, in a very good overall condition would be $12-15k. The G55 AMG, 1998, 82k km, very good condition (spent most of her life in Dubai) would be $25-30k. I wonder how this may compare to the US?

In generall cars are less expensive in the US vs. Europe. Wonder if it is different for G-class. You may take a look at mobile.de or otomoto.pl to see Europe situation.

I've a G400. It is not a common model and has/had a bit of a reputation for being unreliable (electrics). LWB, 4l turbo diesel. However, it's a fantastic thing and we love it. Not had an easy 17 year life and the interior is far from concours but for what we need it for, it's fabulous. Pulls like a train. Until you get to the next filling station ;)
Echo the comments above about wind/road noise. It has the aerodynamics of a concrete block. Got mine from Stick on here and had it modernised a bit

Like a Pagoda, there's likely no such thing as a cheap one! However, the seem to depreciate very very slowly so one of your "big" expenses is diminished

Looks great! A friend of mine has a G400 cabrio. Fabulous! The only recent issue he had was window shifters controller.

James that is a beauty. A 4 liter, 8 cyl diesel? Wow.
I had a 2002 G500 that was my all around DD. I found it heavy and gas thirsty, plus it was not a high speed, long distance cruiser.
I love the look and still do. That is why I was looking at this diesel conversion G. Somehow Gs and diesel engines seem simpatico.

My mechanic has scared me away from this G. Too many unknowns and variables, especially with the engine and trans conversions.
If the car were close to me and I could have it really checked out and drive it I could get to know it and feel confident in it then I would consider.
But it's 900 mile away.
Plus the seller told me when I asked about emissions testing he said there was none done after the conversion. How could I buy a car that may fail emission testing????

Pawel, I think the US prices for higher mile (+100K mile) G500s is low in the US. I see some for sale under $25K and they look great. Nobody in the US take their Gs off road. Thank you for the expert advise. But I am going to pass on this diesel conversion and be happy driving my ML 250 Bluetec for a while.

I do have a set of books (owners manual and parts books that fit the glovebox) for the G wagons, but the earlier ones.
As well as one of the factory posters.

Was chasing after several of the G-wagons around here for myself, but decided against it.
