RHD speedo removal

I have a grumble/whine from the speedo - unfortunately I took the cable inner  out (from the gearbox end) and greased it but it didn`t stop it so unfortunately the speedo itself is next (maybe a bearing) - when the sound is audible, the speedo itself is vibrating. The needle is steady.

I have had the speedo out before, but that was when I had the whole dash apart - this time its a "surgical strike" on the speedo only.  Has anyone done this before and how is the back accessed. Two things to remember - its rhd and I am a fairly normally built bloke with only one wrist and one elbow per arm ;)

George,
I have LHD and assuming your speedo is also inboard. In other words, RPM far right, centre gauge and the speedo to the left.
Removing the RH panel above your R knee, will give you access to the RPM gauge. With that removed and through the hole, you can reach the centre instrument(oil press, temp etc) loosen it and pull towards the steering, do not remove and take care not to damage the wiring to the temp gauge. Now through the RPM hole, you will be able to reach the speedo. Removing the steering will help alot and do not remove the centre instrument, only loosen and pull towards you.
You only need one elbow but an extra wrist and small hands will definitely help.

thanks Chris - that's a start - just maybe therefore I don`t have to access it via the exhaust pipe :D, although it would be great to hear from an actual RHD owner to confirm

George,
It certainly seems a daunting task, but once you get started, it's not really such a big deal. The only diference between LHD and RH is that you would be able to do the job with your right hand.

I would second that removing the steering wheel does make the job a tad easier when

Larry, You might even want to consider removing the seat as well, but that might be going to far.  What you really need is a child helper who has small hands and fingers for this job.

Remove the steering wheel. Remove the chrome vent carefully with nylon wedges. Remove the three screws that secure the ducting behind the vent. You then have clear access to the instruments.
I can R/R a speedo in 45 mins but I have done it hundreds of times.

Sounds like a plan- do you still need to remove the rev counter and central instruments to get across to the speedo?
