66 230sl rear wheel squeal
«

Hi all, when rolling at very low speed <10mph I hear a squealing noise from my right rear. I presume it is something on the rear drum brake. Does anyone have any pointers on what to check, adjust or lubricate?
Thanks

This thread has some relevant information on adjusting:
https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=9453
Also, from Al Lieffring: "the 230sl rear drum brakes have a eccentric cam to manually adjust them by two 19 mm hex heads outside on the backing plate"
But I guess the brakes would usually wear loose not tight so perhaps a sticking brake hose, wheel cylinder, or return spring is preventing the linings from springing open when the brakes are released.

Thanks Dave, I'm going to jack the car up a bit later and take a look. My mechanic briefly had a look at the brakes around this time last year and thought the brakes were correctly adjusted. He also noted that the noise wasn't present when the wheel was spun with it off the ground. It seems to only squeal when under weight. I've been reading a little on right rear wheel bearing issues and am hoping it isn't anything to do with that. If I touch the brakes the noise does increase so hopefully my first assumption is correct.

So it turns out my squeal was badly adjusted shoes. Now adjusted correctly
the squeal has gone! One thing I noticed though was the drum had some float in it (about 0.5 -1mm) is this normal?
Cheers
