Hard top with Sunroof
« on: April 19, 2017, 13:24:45 »
Can anyone clue me up on W113 hard tops with sunroofs?
Were they factory options, or aftermarket?
If aftermarket, were they with MB tick of approval?
I believe they are extremely rare, is this correct?
I have seen pics of some that look square (not as attractive in my opinion) with a latch of some sort and also seen rectangular ones with a winder, similar to a window winder mechanism.
Which would be the better one?
Finally, if i could find one, any idea what I'd have to pay for it??
Cheers
Dan

I've got a 65 230 SL with  a full length fabric sun roof. I used to live in the U.K and the roof was installed by a company called Webasto in London. I've been looking for info on it  to restore it but there's not much around.

You need to call Gernold at SL Tech in Arundel, Maine. He can tell you all about the Webasto sunroof. If memory serves, it was a dealer option. Yes, ultra rare, but not impossible to retrofit today. You can find the sliding roof mechanism in a W114 Sedan or Coupe. Unfortunately, it's all rather pricey. I'm guessing a good Pagoda can sell with a $10-15K premium with this part in decent shape, so that should tell you something about what they're worth.

I actually managed to find a company in the U.K. that still makes and sells all the parts for the sunroof. I love driving with the sunroof open, it's so big almost like having the top down, nice for those colder days. I will restore it eventually but that will be the last thing.

The best and more efficient way to enjoy driving with sunroof open is to have both your tops down ;D

Dear Yash,
Really??  :o :o
I am surprised to see/hear that ! Never saw an SL with such a sun roof. :o 8)
Can you please post a few pictures for us?? 8)

Your tudorwebasto company is a subsidiary or former spin-off
of the "real" Webasto company:
https://www.webasto.com/de/
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webasto

Webasto is _the_ main maker of sliding sun-roofs for all Mercedes passenger cars from the sixties onwards !

My garage mate Tim's 1963 190c has got such a tudorwebasto sunroof.

Would love to see yours ! ;)

Hello Achim, yes I think it's very rare, that's why I was trying to find out more about it. I'll put some pictures up soon.
