230SL Fuel Injection Pump Oil Level
« on: October 09, 2017, 21:00:45 »
I saw the discussion on checking the oil level in the 230SL injection pump that has a dip stick. Mine does not. Any ideas on how to check the level on pumps with no dipstick?

In your photo, the dipstick would not be visible at the camera angle you used.  It is screwed into the body at an angle, just about where the yellow circle is, under the solenoid and aft of the red "OEL" cap.  On the 230SL, at least the hole for it should be there, even if the dipstick has been removed and lost.

Went out this morning to take a photo from under the car to show you how wrong you were and that my car did not have a dipstick. What a surprise I had. Sorry I doubted you. Sure enough...there was a dipstick. Thank you for the good advice. :)

I would suggest if you haven't already, check the condition of the oil. And maybe go ahead and change it unless it has been done recently. Who knows how long it has been since it changed.

Hi mistertj,

When I was writing my post, I almost told you to look down between the two brake fluid reservoir inlets from the master cylinder.  That's where I took my photos from in the other thread about IP oil.  Then I realized that the reservoir is not yet installed on my master cylinder and that it will obscure the view of the IP dipstick.  You were right to go under the car.  I think that's the only place from which you can see it on a car that's completely assembled.  I found mine by feel originally but even that wasn't easy.

wwheeler is right.  It's probably more grunge than oil in the IP.

Hi Tom - Was changing the oil in the car today so after that, unscrewed the "dip stick" to check the oil. Mine was pristine clean. Of course it should be I put the pump back in the car about a year ago...just didn't remember it I put the oil back in. Thanks for thee help.
