Headrest - 2B or not 2B?
« on: April 23, 2017, 11:40:27 »
JOH here [in the UK]. I've posted before on this subject as I purchased a '68 280sl last year, and it does not have headrests. I'm about to have the interior redone, and have headrest covers sent to me with the seat covers - so wondering if I should acquire a pair - and have them covered/fitted at the same time?? Looking at other Pagoda's I'm not sure if I actually like the look of them - particularly with the roof off/down?? Sort of prefer the horizontal flatness of the body without! So I look forward to your thoughts/views on this.
John.

It's all a balance of safety and authenticity the value of which is different for every owner. My car came with headrests, and I'm sure glad it did. There's a strong reason to have them from a safety standpoint. Just do an internet search for "headrest safety" or related and you'll come up with a large amount of justification for them.

As for authenticity, that's another story. Some value authenticity far more than safety. If the car didn't have headrests, some owners would never consider it.

How and where you use your car might provide you with some direction. For me, in 21st century USA, three point seatbelts and headrests are the bare minimum of safety items I ask for, and my '69 is thus equipped.

Times change and so does safety perception. In 1987, you couldn't give airbags away here in the USA; there was all manner of "big daddy" and the "nanny state" telling us what to do and buyers were objecting. We actually got a great deal on a 1987 Ford because it HAD airbags and they couldn't sell it! Today, even removing the mandate for them, no auto manufacturer would dare offer a car without them. I think my car has eight of them, maybe ten...front, side, and even in the seatbelts. Frankly I wouldn't have it any other way. And no, they are not Takata.

Car definitely looks cooler without the headrests especially with the top down.  However neck looks better with the head attached to it so I guess in the end its a subjective matter of opinion/taste .... :o

-:) 68 (with headrests and 3 point seat belts)

Hi JOH ( in the UK )
I have a 69 280, American spec without headrests and probably next year i will be making the same decision.
Already i have given it quite a lot of consideration and at the moment i am in the 'leave it without' camp because i am thinking exactly the same as you, don't like the look of them and love the horizontal flatness of the body.
I am also well aware of the 'health' implications but then again i don't have seat belts either and love driving her without them also.
What a rebel !
I may well give in to the seat belts when the time comes i guess, because they won't alter those beautiful lines.
One question i will ask is how tall are you ? The reason i ask is this, i have seen 'tall people' 6ft and over, driving Pagodas with head rest's and there head and neck are so far above the head rest that i,m not sure it would actually do much good if the time came, which unfortunately for me makes the decision harder, being a short ar..
Best of luck, with or with out.

In order for the headrest to be effective, it has to be at the same height as your head. Center of your head must touch center of the headrest. So, in my 1970, when I fully extend the headrest it is still way lower that the center of my head. I am 5ft 8in. And so, I find the headrest useless.

I think headrests became an option from October 1968. So if you are a purist you should not fit them on a car made before this date.

Quadraplegic purists are the worst type- My son is a neurosurgeon and has many stories -protect the spine/head and you can complain about the lack of originality later.  If the car is purely a trailer to show venue car no problem- if you are on the open road at all its a problem.  Remember these are rare/special cars and often attract a lot of attention. Ive seen many drivers whip out a cell phone to snap a pic not all of them are so good at multitasking at 60 miles an hour
