280 soft top in an early 230

Hello everyone

My very early 230sl came out of the factory with out a soft top.  I recently got a 280sl soft top that has to be restored. Today I tried to fit the soft top but It didn't fit well in the boot. The lid didn't close and I was afraid to force it

Is it just that I don't know How to make it fit or it will just not fit at all?

Is the top completely down in the well? Does it hit any parts, e.g., the lid hinges?
Post a photo and then it will be easier to help.
