is this a correct MB Tex ?
« on: August 04, 2017, 18:53:08 »
Hi,
Looking for some help here. According to the datacard my recently acquired 1966 230 SL has MB Tex 116 (Caviar). Looking at 2 photos in a book I have (Original Mercedes SL by L Meredith) its seems MB Tex had the basketweave pattern .
Can anyone help to identify if the upholstery in the attached photos is original (at least original looking) MB Tex for a 1966?

Thanks
Pedro

PSB,
unfortunately you do not have the correct Code 116 MB-tex. Here are photos showing what a correct one looks like, and yes it has a basket weave pattern:

Thank you both for the replies ...even though they seem contradictory . But mine are clearly different to yours Alfred so looks like I have something else ....the colour looks similar (my photo colour is quite off from reality) but I was looking for confirmation of the material, so could it be non original material ? So if not w113 leather or MB Tex it would be some after market covers . ....

Hi Pedro,
Alfred shows the original and correct ones - a very nice set!
Yours look more like the later 280SL tex.

I deleted my post.  I researched the basketweave issue before I posted but somehow I posted my original message.  Basket weave down the center for a 230SL is correct.

The attached BW photo was taken of my 250SL when it was a about a year old. The color photo is of my 280. Both were/are cognac MB Tex. The 250 had a much smoother finish then the 280 which has a more pronounced "leather grain" effect. Both center sections are perforated.

Thank you all, you have been very helpful. It is clear  that mine are a later 280 type . Perforated in the centre ( not that easy to see in the photo) but definitely no basket weave. Well ... Some surprises due to an not well informed buyer buying ( should have joined the group before) in full confidence from a not very well informed seller. But so far it has proved overall a positive surprise ... no rust, an engine that had been stopped for 8 years was not too expensive  to get going again ....the car passed the compulsory roadworthy inspection and now just waiting for number plates to start rolling !  Some of the needed interior work ( mainly dash related wood e dash recovering  ..will wait for winter after some new  miles on it).
Thank you again.
