If you are removing it to replace a leaking front seal there is a very good chance the leak is where the 'Snout" of the torque converter is rivited to the body of the converter.  Lay the converter on it's back,  fill the area around the snout with water Not inside the converter) and pressureize the converter with compressed air and a rag.  Replaced mine 3 times before I found the leak.  Fix is to have it welded around the enge and around the rivits.

I just removed the transmission from my 250 SE. Toughest part was getting the 46mm nut on the drive shaft to loosen up. I ordered a 46mm wrench from McMaster Carr and use a pipe wrench to hold the drive shaft steady. I assume the 280 SL is the same setup. I used a lift. I'm not sure you could do this without one.

I very much agree with Shvegel. On my car, what was believed to be a failed gasket was something much more serious.You should absolutely inspect (under a high power magnifier) the weld joints where the internally splined collar is attached to the body of the torque converter. Mine had a very small crack that required replacement of the unit at a cost of about $700.
