Plaid Seats
« on: December 08, 2022, 16:40:00 »
Like with the R107, it seems the W113 could be ordered with whatever interiors the customer desired. I have seen some very interesting interiors on some of the earlier R107s, like what can be seen here: https://www.macarbon.com/component/virtuemart/mamb-107-802-1578-1588-detail and of course we all know about the 300SL, 190SL, and 230SL Rallye seats.

That said, I haven't ever seen any W113s with contrasting fabric seats. I find it unlikely that none would exist, if it was ever truly an option. Is anyone aware of any W113 (aside the Rallye) with such seats from the factory?

Not me, never seen it in person or on-line.  That w107 cloth is a 'base' interior in most parts of the world.

I have a euro 107 - 1983 that came with Karo 032 blue cloth inserts.
I have grown to like the plaid cloth interior a lot.
I have seen some euro 123s and 124s with beautiful cloth seatings and panels.
Unique to Europe unfortunately.

The velour interiors on the other hand I do not like at all.

I almost bought a Euro w123 230 coupe with those cloth inserts.  I do think they look nice.  I'm sure someone, somewhere customizing their Pagoda has used it.  I've never sat on MB's velour seat material, would be interesting.

i also love the look of plaid seats, i think some early Porsche's had them, and of course the later SL's.  i don't believe it was ever an option on W113's from the factory, perhaps a dealer could arrange it for you, but i've never seen a picture of a car with anything other than MB-Tex or leather

17   Ausstattung   Upholstery.
The first digit of the 3-digit upholstery code designates the type, i.e.

0 Cloth (not available with the W113)
1 MB-Tex (Vinyl)
2 Leather

Personally hate the look and feel of velour either in a car or in a living room

I had considered making some seat covers, as I need to do something with my seats anyway -- the foam and hair have long degraded. An option I'd considered is reproducing the seats from the Rallye, which resemble a certain Recaro model, through GTS Classics out in Texas. He has some 300SL fabrics as well as other Mercedes fabrics. There's one sample that has the same light blue of the body, cream of the wheel, cognac/brown of the MBtex elsewhere, and beige of the carpet. I think it could look snazzy, though a gal pal of mine says it could clash with any outfit I wear. Well, she doesn't get to vote!

From the catalog:
Upholstery in MB-TEX (in place of cloth): Washable and hard-wearing. A wide range of colours and patterns, fully or semi-piped. Available for saloons models of 190/190D, 220S/SE, 300SE, 300SE long and 230SL.

But after pulling out the 230SL brochure (covered in the first owner's pre-Excel tally of option combinations!) and reading closely the section about the interior, it appears nowhere is cloth mentioned -- only leather and vinyl. So no wonder one doesn't see cloth anywhere. It is odd to me that it evidently wasn't considered an option even though it appeared in the up-market 190 and 300.

Indeed, I believe they had at least three choices. A friend of mine had a 300SL with red plaid seats. Mercedes recently made three of the fabrics available again for purchase -- at $300/yard. I have also seen a brown check fabric in one of the 300SL racecars that Mercedes posted to their official social media.
