Engine Oil Dip Stick
« on: April 24, 2018, 12:25:33 »
Yesterday was a wonderful day in South Western Ontario. 21 C the sun was out in full force so taking the car for a spin was a no brainer :)

Since I do have a tinny oil leak I naturally checked the oil level. To my surprise I found that my Dip Stick has markings 230/250 (see photo). Now I am wondering since I do have a 280 SL Engine if my Dip Stick is the correct length.

Can someone out there please tell me the dimension of a 280 SL Pagoda Dip Stick.

Dimension from the end to the underside of the cap (full penetration length into the engine).

Thanks in advance!

Check out the tech manual. It basically says if it fits you have the correct one.  They are not interchangeable.

I have the same markings on my early 280sl which gave me concerns years ago.

Dieter, I think your dip stick is fine, my 280SL has the exact same markings (chassis 007749).

To answer your question the measurement is 11 3/4 inches (298mm).

Thank you both, much apprichiated! The car was restored by RM in 1992 and I would think they would not have let it pass with a incorrect Dip Stick.

Thanks again,’

Dieter. The fellow you bought the car from passed away a couple of weeks ago. Thought you would like to know.

Hi Dan,

Yes I know he was 88 May he rest in piece he was a nice fellow.

I wonder what his son and Famaly will do with all the 20 plus American cars from the 50s and 60s.
