To do an easy check : remove existing incoming wire from the 0.6 resistor and add +12v to it.

Do a normal start with the key, only tot stop the engine you might need to cut of the temp. added 12V, or the engine will run as long as the fuelpump supplies fuel. This might cause a lean mixture

Now you have the ignition without the electronic unit ..

Thank you guys!  So the points were closed during the test. I finally decided to clean them despite them looking brand new and boom Voltage at the coil. Points open and no voltage.  So I put it back together and it starts and idles nicely. It actually cold starts easier now then ever.

I should have just cleaned the dang points from the get go (like many suggested) but at least I learned a bunch about the ignition system.

Exactly! You learned a lot. You bonded more with your car - you will love it more!

Points, cup, rotor, condenser: have them in your trunk at all times. Some people carry the coil too. And lots of other items...

Happy you found the cause of the issue.

So glad it turned out to be something simple.  Now you have accumulated some "that happened to me once" knowledge to pass along someday!  ;^)

Now might be the time to think about a Hall Effect system (Hot Spark or Pertronix)
