Motor Change for 230SL: 500 V8 SEC
« on: January 19, 2005, 15:31:14 »
My name is Bruce Springate and a I am a new member from Harrodsburg KY (Kentucky USA). I have two 113MB: a 1966 230SL that is TAN with NAVY interior and 130,000 Miles; and a 1967 230SL that is WHITE with NAVY interior and 98,000 Miles.

Both have 4 speed straight shift transmission and are in excellent condition with no rust. I have owned the 66 for over 25 years.

I am in the process of putting the motor and transmission of a 1981 500SEC into the 1967 230SL.  So far all is going well. I will have the 1967 motor and transmission for sale when the change is complete.

I would like to change the seats for a little better seat.  If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate the input. I feel this will be a very special car when I get the 500 V8 in the 230SL.

Thanks,  Bruce

Welcome Bruce - sounds like you're a true Pagoda enthusiast. The 500 SEC engine transplant sounds exciting. I am sure we would all like to hear about your experiences there. It would be great if you could post some pictures of this project some time.

Bruce,

Hi.  What a project!  Good luck with it, there are people who will be wanting to pick your brain when your done.  You'll find three "religions" on this site:

 - keep it original
 - modify a little for safety
 - go all out and make it a unique car

We actually all get along pretty well given the different opinions.  Speaking of which, is the '66 being kept as original as possible while you totally modify the '67?  That would make for dramatic contract of vehicles in your garage!

By the way, on the internet it is considered shouting when using ALL CAPS.

Thanks,

I have always liked Recaro seats.  You could have these covered in the same MB materials and patterns as per original.  These seats would give you all the support you would need.

hi bruce,
i got to admit that it the look of the pagoda that first got me hooked, rather than the engine ect.i think that look with a  simple 289 v8 engine the car would have more suited the american market of the sixtes, good luck with your project, dont forget to spend a bit of time on the brakes.
