Need a new exhaust system, UK.
« on: June 10, 2018, 17:34:00 »
My centre silencer box gave up today.  The rear box looks good but I notice that my system seems to be one long single part, IE from the headers to the tail pipes.

Seems most come in sections, could it  be a one piece system?

Also, best place to source a new system (mild steel) in the UK please.  1966 230SL RHD.

Many thanks.

Hi Paul,
‘All’ the Pagodas had dual pipes all the way to the tail pipes.
However, I have read that some 250SLs had a single pipe, after the down pipes. I don’t really believe that, but my 4th Pagoda, in 40 years, a 250SL, purchased about 2 years ago, came with a single pipe from the down pipes all the way to the tail end.
I hope that someone more knowledgeable could give us the answer.

The correct exhaust is an all welded double pipe arrangement made from mild steel and is available from MB.
There are a couple of companies that supply slip-fit stainless steel exhausts but i’ve Never really been satisfied with the fit, especially the down pipes. You also get a different exhaust note.
I currently have a car with a new supplier who makes bespoke stainless exhausts. I will let you know if I’m satisfied with the result.

Many thanks for this.  A confusion for me is that on ebay there is a full replacement system, but the supplier says its for LEFT HAND DRIVE cars only?  Were there two types of front pipes? LEFT and RIGHT hand drive?  This one looks very much like my existing one piece system which might be around 30 years old. My car is a 1965 230SL UK car.

Yes, certainly. On a RHD Pagoda, the exhaust headers face forward to make room for the steering box.

Perhaps before going with the aftermarket Imasaf system, you should look into the
OEM Ebersprächer or Gillet, available via your M-B dealer.

You may want to read about the front pipe crossover boxes as well

I fitted a stainless steel exhaust on my friend's 1969 RHD 280SL which we purchased from Quicksilver (I'm not in anyway connected with them).
Good service and delivery, it was a perfect fit with no complications.

https://quicksilverexhausts.store/products/250-sl-w113-stainless-steel-exhaust-front-pipes-1967-71

If you go this route, you will need to purchase the exhaust fitting kit which is extra:
https://www.sls-hh-shop.de/main/en/mercedes-230-280sl-w113-/49-b-stainless-steel-exhaust-230sl-250sl-280sl/fitting-set-for-249493-496-p-5377

FWIW I also fitted a stainless steel exhaust from SLS, on my LHD '71 280SL , and as Hans commented there's a difference between LHD and RHD exhausts.

Best,
Mike

I was considering IMASAF as I found it on one of the portals here, I figured they were producing exhaust for MB (I think for 250SL only) for some short period of time - but then one of the fellow Members warned me that IMASAF was not a good fit. You may want to search the forum for that.

I switched to chasing the exhaust parts from MB, waiting if something is not available. I hope for the sound to be correct from MB parts and sound is of top importance to me, quite frankly...

I believe that the original Ebersprächer is no longer available.  I've replaced mine with the Gilette from Mercedes and am very disappointed with the loud sound it produces.  The Ebersprächer is much quitter.  If you can find an Ebersprächer, please contact me and I will immediately purchase one.  I've been told that the ANSA product is fairly quiet but can't vouch for that.

Bit of an update.

I wanted to replace my whole system as the one I have looks almost original.    I contacted Classic Mercedes and a couple of other merc suppliers and all said the front down pipes (from the manifolds) for RIGHT hand drive cars are no longer available.  LEFT hand drive no problem.

I ended up replacing the centre and rear boxes and kept the front part in place.  I got the exhausts off Ebay.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exhaust-System-MERCEDES-PAGODE-W113-230-SL-CENTRE-MUFFLER-END-SILENCER/382380988577?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

It looks ok but didn't fit exactly.  The existing front pipe seemed too long, (or the ebay one too long!) so needed to cut and sleeve the centre box pipe to make it fit. Sounds good and mild steel quality seems good. Came with all fittings and 2 chrome tail sections as well.

Slight concern that RIGHT hand drive front pipes seem no longer available, unless anyone know where to get them?

Ken, The Eberspacher Resonator and Rear Muffler are still out there. I was able to find them on various german sites. Here are the internal Eberspacher part numbers in the photos below. They sound good at idle but unfortunately I have not been able to properly test/hear them at run-up due to my issues with the front pipes.

I bought an Ebay Imasaf one for my W111 and can confirm, Like Pawel, that it was NOT a good fit.

Hi Francisco,

I installed it myself but it took me some time and quite a bit of effort.

If you buy one and get it installed at a workshop they will probably manage it ok.

IMASAF is inexpensive to buy so worth paying the money to give somebody else the headache to fit it !!

I would not say do not buy one but you can obviously buy better !!

Hi,
I heard from several people that the fitting accuracy of IMASAF exhausts leaves a lot to be desired and needs a lot of ajustment (sawing & welding).
