Cylinder head for 250 SL??
« on: January 17, 2005, 08:19:36 »
Bad news for me today!!!! The machine shop told me that the cylinder head is beyond repair. There were cracks between every spark plug and the valve channels. Does anyone have a clue as to where I can get a decent cylinder head for a 250 SL??

You may want to check the acceptable level of cracks for your head. My Mercedes OM352 diesel has such a spec and I have heard that all of them appear to be cracked but are actually not beyond rebuilding. You may be able to use the head. From what I understand the M129 head is the most desirable and probably the hardest to find.

Might have one.  Have to dig in the garage on a warmer day.

Call Mike Elias at Metric Motors 818-712-9881. He has cylidar heads stacked floor to ceiling (18 foot). He recently did a full block rebuild on my engine (plus lots of extra help on AC pulleys etc) and knows his stuff and is great to work with.

...as an added note, Metric Motors is one of the two premier engine rebuilders for Mercedes engines in the USA...the other being Noel's in Florida.  One on each coast--how convenient.  As I have a full Metric rebuild in my car, I'll echo the kind words about Mike Elias.  Their only business is engines, so they do it well.

If the worst comes to the worse I have seen cracked heads repaired, including alloy ones where the area is ground out, new material added and machined.
very expensive though

New cylinder heads are still available (albeit not all applications from what I understand) "at a price" (around $2,500-$3,000?). Good option is to get a reconditioned one from one of the specialists. Do watch out for hefty import duties when importing from outside the EU, Mulrik.

Just got this quote from Mike on my cylinder head request.

"   It includes all the machine work done + new guides, new seals, new
springs, new valves. (camshaft and lifters not included). It has been
pressure tested and is within allowable thickness. Ready to roll.
Your cost is US$1,050.00 exchange. Add core deposit of $1,100.00 (or core
charge if we do not get a rebuildable head returned). Total price US$
2,150.00 +  UPS shipping
We can also supply the head gasket set for an additional $65.00
Hope this helps. If you want it we would need you engine # and/or head
casting # as there are diiferent applications in 1969.
