The only thing in common that various types of trans fluid has is its base (petrolium) and its red color. Have a look at the “Automatic Transmissions” section of this link. It gives a history of Dexron and ATF in general.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEXRONIMHO if you dont know exactly what is in it, flush the system completely and add the mfg advised fluid. Especially during component replacement.
