Steering column and plate

Anybody with a column shifter that knows about this?
I have to change the steering bushings and I would like to remove the steering column and lift the firewall plate as opposed to removing the steering box. The W113 owners found this way easier but they do not have a column shifter. As I am looking at what I have to do I have a question about the automatic gear shifter shaft.
It appears there is a big contraption in the engine bay attached to it, linkages and other things that may not go through the plate hole to give access to bushings.
Can this be disconnected somehow or is it sliding enough for access?
Are there some cross section drawings for the steering column, the BBB doesn't have it. Can the steering column tube be separated from the firewall plate?
Thank you,
Radu
