Thermo time switch vs thermo switch

Apologies if this question has been addressed elsewhere.

I have a 64 version 10 230SL. It has a clearly identifiable "thermo time switch" (device 32 in the schematic) with G and W wires connected. The technical manual seems to imply that it may also have a second "thermo switch" (device 34) with one wire.

If there is a thermo switch, where would it be located? Next to the TTS there is a capillary fitting for the temperature gauge, and I don't see anywhere else in the cooling system where the TS could be.

I looked just out of curiosity...

On this picture as well as when you go to SLS picture on Electrical Equipment at engine you see both of these switches in the switch housing, number 80 on Cooling System picture (link).

I have a 1963 220SE and it has both switches. I think Mercedes had moved on to just having the one switch when your vehicle was made (1964).

I think the Technical Manual has good info on this.

To reply more fully - your assumption is correct. On my car the two switches are adjacent to each other in the same housing as the temperature sensor.

If you knew the MB part number, I can check in EPC in which engine numbers given part was installed. But there were many numbers for these switches and is says in description "switch, automatic" - I do not know which switch is which.

Also take a look at Pagoda Notes Vol 2, issues 2 and 3 for a detailed look at the starting systems, etc.

Yes, as Peter replied, if you have a "time switch" it is close to the tts on the same housing. The "time swich" is simply an "on or off" switch depending on engine temperature. It has only one wire connected to it.  The "thermos time switch" besides being an "on/off" switch has a time duration involved depending on engine temperature. It has two wires connected to it and can be on for different periods of time (up to 17 sec.). Only the earliest 230SLs and early sedans etc. had the "time switch". These early versions would be "Version II of the starting aids.  "Version I" of the starting aids was never used in the W113 cars, but also used a time switch in the early sedans etc. of the late 50s and early 60s.

My 1966 230 SL has the two rectangular relays as described in the Starting Aids Guide, but there are two unconnected wires next to these and no device.  Am I missing the "time switch"?  If so, where can you buy this?

Bob, I see one starting aid relay, one wiper motor relay and a one second relay (round). The two wires look like they may have been connected to an aux. fuse box?  Need some wire color information to be sure.
