Convertible top Retrofit - California Models
« on: January 21, 2005, 16:58:53 »

Gentlemen:  I am a new member to the group that has just bought a very nice 70 280SL Automatic California.  Has anyone attempted to retrofit a convertible top to these models that were not fitted with one?

Does the California model have attachment points on the body to accommodate the soft top?  (My car is in storage now otherwise I would go out and look)

Any potential sources for the top?  I've seen parts for the top listed on Miller's but no complete top assembly.

Best Regards,

Jim Hunter, Ottawa Canada

Jim,

Welcome. Get in contact with Gernold at SL Tech up in Kennebunkport, Maine. He'll be able to advise and, among other things, is a top specialist.

That conversion has been done many times by ambitious owners. I've seen it done a  couple of ways -- some a simple bolt-in and others with an actual "well" installed from a donor roadster.

Let us know how things progress.

Hi Jim
Nice to see someone from the area join the gang...I'm in Shawville Quebec an hour from you and my car is a converted "california coupe", done by a previous owner/restorer. There appears to be some small mods that need to be done.... the wheel arches in the soft top compartment need to have a depression hammered in to allow the arms to nest when the top is folded, the aluminum wall of the top compartment has to be added, some brackets need to be welded in place, a donor well/top cover needs to be found and the arms to go with it, the proper cover gasket rim needs to be fitted and the floor panels need to be fitted unless you plan to use the bench seat without a backrest and even then it won't look right. It is certainly a lot of work, but mine shows it can be done. Perhaps you could have a look at my car and see what's involved. By the way I have replacement rear floor panels for sale, I'm a cabinetmaker and they aren't available, so I have reproduced them (I needed a set). It's hardly top down weather these days (-24F or -34C last night)but we should plan on a spring meet with the half dozen or so Ottawa owners (none of whom are on this list, except for Rupert in Arnprior)
Drop me a line and we can talk about it.

Hello Jim,

the link below shows some pics of an in-
stallation of an original softtop without
changing anything on the chassis.

Wouldn't you know it. I have a car I'm cutting up for parts and it has the soft top area still in it. Someone bought the front clip so the rear of the car is still here.
3 hours from Toronto - still in Canada.

I've met Rupert and know Ricardo. We went up to visit him and Val last Sept and had a great time. Very nice area of the country they live in.

Right you are Dan...it's known as Pontiac county, but we call it "the last, best place on earth" :D
It's next to the Ottawa River, one of the most important rivers in the settlement of North America and the only one (I think) that flows west for half it's length and then reverses and flows east to the St. Lawrence (today's geography lesson)

Gentlemen:

I would like to thank those who responded to my inquiry as to retrofitting a convertible top to my '70 280SL California model.  Herr Hauser especially for the photographs, and Erik, Ricardo and Rupert (who I find are local - almost) with their friendly messages.  I look forward to meeting them at a future date, hopefully once this salt strewn winter is finished and we can drive W113s on the road once again without fear of them self destructing within the first half hour.

Cheers

Jim Hunter
