I am not competent enough to answer your other questions...

But: as for machining the head and then managing related offset vs. timing chain and overall timing work (valves, studs, rockers stc.) - the are a lot of threads on this forum and advise how to best go about it, including shimming of the camshaft pedestals (towers).

I was trying to check the vertical play in the vertical timing gear using the method that Joe suggested (in an old post) and it does exhibit some play but maybe not too much.   I wonder how much is too much?

I'm going to remove the VTG anyway so I'd probably have a better feel to examine the thrust bushing when I remove it.  Right?

That's showing the removal of a chain rail which is a different part but removal is similar.
