thermo-slide valve on I.P.

got round this weekend to taking off and cleaning the slide valve,which was stuck as the doctor thought it would be.have a new thermostat and the sealing ring it sits on also to go in.got a few questions,the new thermo does not have the rubber ring on the pin where it goes into the body,but does have a rasied part or shoulder there instead,i presume this  shoulder should fit into the hole in the metal sealing ring,but its fractionally to small,should i make the hole a fraction bigger,and then use a sealing compound.??

Hi9 Andy,

I had the same issue when I replaced this part.  I enlarged the hole just enough for the new thermostat to fit.  No problems.

i did read the posts last july,where joe,jeff and eric had had disscused this.i was a bit worried as the new thermo was different  at the point where it seats on to the ring,and also both parts being new,surely they should fit with out enlarging the hole.seeing as how important it is that no water gets into the slide valve chamber or worse then into the I.P.gave me some concern.when i took it apart it seemed that no sealing compound had been used where thermo and ring meet, did you guys use any?.also did you have to make any changes re. the shims. i have 2 where the valve body connects to the pump,and 4 small washers inside the slide valve held in by a circlip

Hi Andy,

I have not changed the shims.  I suggest you get things working correctly and then consider changing the shims.  I did use a small amount of sealer although I'm not sure it was necessary.  Some auto parts stores carry a hi-temp sealer for radiator fittings.  I would use that if I were you.
