Spare fuel can in spare tire
« on: January 15, 2005, 10:44:19 »
Has anyone bought this particular product from SLS in Germany?  I am very interested in it but am concerned about how it fits over the small handle that tightens downt the spare.  Also, I would not want it to leak and ruin my spare tire cover.  Please share your thoughts about this product.

http://sls.sparebase.de/bin/dbframes.phtml?mid=IN02

In the top right window scroll down to image of the trunk tools and jack and then click on it.  It's item #110 for about 64 Euro.

Thanks,

I doubt this item is for 113. If
anybody is interested in having
this on 113, I can figure out the
Merc part no.

I thought this was an option on the early 230Sls.  These cars (mine included) has the spare on the left side of the trunk in a somewhat upright position.  The trunk is different as there is a semicircular piece in the bottom that allows the tire to fit.  If you are interested I can post a picture of mine for you.  But I believe the gas can was meant to fit in there.

Mine rests inside the spare tire cover using a long bolt to hold the can and tire in place. Tool kit does not fit when the can is in place. To see spare click on http://24.56.70.142/~zanone/spare/spare_index.html

Zanone,
Thanks for the detailed pics.  This looks exactly like what SLS is selling.  Is that where you got yours?  Is your tank metal?  Any leaking problems?

Thanks,

Rodd,

This is the Mercedes metal container, bought it on Ebay from "kcigermany". Haven't checked for a leak, but the top locks down tightly. Bob Possel mentioned that you paid a heavy fine if you ran out of petro on the Autobahn so it may have been a European accessory.

The Problem with them seems to be that they are only 7 litres.

The MB service manual says that if the fuel level gets too low you need to put 12 litres in the tank before the electric fuel pump will prime the system.

That seems to beg the question... "are these fuel tanks a genuine W113 option"

The second one goes under the kinder seat- voila, 2 extra liters.

Rodd:

Here is one of the spare tire gas cans currently available on ebay. Says it is new in box. Has photos.

Ed,

It's already up over US $100 with 4 days left!  The brand new ones from SLS are only Euro $64.  I would have to pay shipping on both, a little more from SLS in Germany.  Why not buy a new one and eliminate the eBay risk?

well I see the eBay one just got $US390! Let's hope it was genuine. I think I'll just keep watching my fuel gauge closely rather than relying on a spare fuel reserve!

Neil,
Yes, my fuel reserve light does work, but I don't get the 22mpg that you get (unless there's some US v. Imperial gallon conversion going on here) so I was thinking it might be a nice thing to have.

Rodd.
i bought one of these and it arrived the other day with some other parts from sls,it does fit into the spare wheel, the info that came with it suggests you by a fixing kit,and then goes on to tell which kit is right for which model,113 is not listed.my car is a 280 and the wheel lies more or less flat fixed by a threaded  bolt with a disk to hold the wheel central and then a handle for gripping,if i got this extended it would do the job nicely as the can has recess for the disk part...but,theres allways a but...,it looks like the tyre cover poper wont fastern down as the handle is to high, could allways change the top of the handle for a large bolt head, but i wont rush in to anything yet.it sort of defeats the object.
the can itself looks very good its metal, a dark gray in colour, with a polished metal flexi hose, clamped to the top, i wouldnt think it would leak.proberbly look more at home strapped to the side of romels staff car though....if you want some close up pics, get in touch.

I bought a "gently used" looking tank on ebay for $81.00 US. It looks like it belongs in my car as its "gently used"-looking, too. With the star emblem showing its certainly a conversation piece.

To overcome the tire-cover fit issue, I bought a bolt (12mm dia x 14cm long) locally and had a machine shop weld a flat washer and wing nut in place of the hex head for $10.00. Cover now snaps down fine. Appears original-looking even if not.
