Minor reconditioning of the wood center console
« on: August 04, 2019, 21:31:05 »
Mine was "loose" but the hold down screws were tight so I took it out of the car to see what was needed and clean it up a bit.  My question is this - the bottom was what was loose and it was held to the box with staples.  Is that stock or was this an ill-conceived fix and I should glue it?  I gently re-seated the staples and cleaned, waxed, and buffed it and it now seems solid and looks better but I will take it out, remove the staples and glue it if that's they way it was made originally.

I went through the same exercise a few years ago. Mine was also held to the box with staples, I believe that was how it was done from the factory.

I removed the old staples, took my staple  gun and reinstalled new ones. All OK.

Russell,

I had mine refurbished with all rest of the wood by a well known restorer of wood and it had the staples when finished.

I have 3 - two original with staples and a 3rd that was restored by Drew Tibkin. He used small brads to attach but there is evidence of the original staples there.

Thanks guys.  this little car is certainly an adventure.  I feel much better knowing that there's a high probability that staples were used by MB and will leave it that way.   8)
