Actually, this was the combination digital (the anaLOG unit was wood, of course!) climate control that was being developed for the 1972 W113 280SL that M-B was keeping in the model mix just in case the new R107 model wasn't production ready in time. It was designed to fit into the existing speaker grill area. This would allow M-B to utilize the area where the heater levers formerly resided for the center A/C dash vents of a factory installed A/C unit, eliminating the bulky add-on look of the dealer installed A/C.
