Gear Shift Nylon Bearings
« on: May 06, 2003, 15:46:50 »
I would like to tighten up the gear shift movements 8)  on my 1965 230 SL.  I have already replaced the nylon bearings on the ball socket.  Is there a nylon bearing kit for the shift tube and two push rods?  Are there also bearings for were the push rods join the manual transmission?

On page 107 of the Haynes manual do I have the G76/18, G72, G76/27 or G72 manual transmission?

I am a new member.  Thank you for this format.  Is there a spell check?

Rupert, yes new bearings are available for the shift rod and support rods.  If I remember right, there are 2 at each end of the shift rod, and 1 at each end of the support rods.

I think all the 4-speed manual trannies are G72.

Hi Rupert,

There are 2 nylon bearings at the front of the shift-tube (trans. end), 4 smaller bearings at the rear of the shift-tube (shift lever end), and 4 bushings (different from the others) for the ends of the 2 support rods.

I think there may be 2 different types of bushings available for the support rods; perhaps it depends on the year of the car.  I received 2 white nylon bushings that were too tall, so I cut each one in half to make up the 4 needed.
