Restoring Tail Lights

Hello everyone, I am re chroming a load of bits for my early 230 and would like to know if anyone has successfully dismantled the early red tail lights? They are the original ones in perfect condition other than dull chrome surrounds. If they cant be dismantled without ruining them is there a process to re chrome or similar without dismantling?, I did look in the tech manual and it does not look promising.
regards Neil

I also did re chroming but unfortunately I wasn't able to rescue the plastic, because it had become far too fragile.

While not answering your question about chrome, something that I do to the plastic, is polish them. Use a DA, foam pad, with a compound (if needed) then a polish. Gets rid of the micro scratches, and makes the lens shine.

Neil,
I am sure Colin Fearns aka Stickandrudderman has previously posted that he rechromes these without removing the plastic lenses. You could contact him.
Colin - sorry if I have misquoted you!

Yes, they can be done with the lenses in but you get a rough edge where the chrome meets the plastic.
