230SL Tonneau Cover - Job Complete

Started this Fall with the idea of a tonneau cover for my 230SL. Could only find one on the market for a 280SL but after writing to the supplier multiple times and getting no responses, decided that I'd try to do it myself. Started off making patters out of sheet plastic. Then used those patterns to cut the material...some old awning material and a bed sheet. They worked, so with those as a pattern and adding zippers, I made the final product using convertible top material. Results are shown in the photos.

Great job, especially with the prototype first.

I have one too, made of heavy softtop cloth (not Sonnenland).
It's for a car without headrests too.

Well done TJ,
It looks good and functional.
I saw one a few years ago where the guy used MG type ‘lift the dots’ all round the cockpit, the doors, the dash, the horse shoe cover, everywhere and it really looked crap.

I did not want to drill any holes so in the front I made some clips that hook over the wooden dash trim. I put the one side sticky velcro (the hook texture) on those and sewed the loop velcro into the cover. There is a velcro strap that loops around the mirror and one that loops into each door handle. The cover is zippered down the middle so that you can drive the car while leaving the passenger side still covered. Then there is a zipper that can detach the two front pieces if desired. I made back hatch cover part like a pocket so that it slips over the hatch from the back. On the underside there are more velcro attach points as well as a snap on each side. They are those new snap bases that are plastic with 3M sticky stuff on the back. A pretty neat invention.
