drivers side e brake cable
« on: January 26, 2020, 21:23:12 »
hello
i replaced the e brake cables on my 66 230sl last year.

when the parking brake is engaged the cable hangs down toward the ground,

unlike the passenger side the drivers side does not have a support loop to keep it against the floor of the car.

any thoughts on a solution?  i re installed the cables exactly as they came out.

thanks in advance
Matt

note how the two cables run. 9mm band clamps hold them onto the rear axle tubes

Hans
hi,
thank you for the response.

i have attached photos of the one e brake cable hanging down.  I purchased them as a set,  i assume both are the same length.

I have attached some other photos showing how the cable is clamped on another car

I think they're different lengths LT and RT. 280 and 230 are also different.

well Benz Dr you are correct

Emergency Brake Cable
Right Side Cable Length 2095mm

Left Side  Cable Length 1550mm

(Overall - from ends of cable Fittings)

looks like i was not paying attention when i re installed the cables.

the question now is can i swap them with out disassembling the entire drum brakes

Well pulled the e brake cables today and confirmed i had them swapped.

re installed correctly now the drivers side cable seems ok with the e brake handle pulled up.

on thing i did notice now, is on the passengers side is the support o ring for the cable is stretched quite a bit.
in the reference photographs in this thread the o ring is mostly relaxed.

currently the bracket that holds the o ring is straight down,   tomorrow I will see if angling it to the passenger side relieves some of the tension

thanks again

to further complicate things it turns out the passenger side cable was either incorrect or had a manufacturing defect.

the supplier sent me a replacement and the body is about 1" longer that the one i had.

back on track now
