problem with ignition key ....
« on: March 11, 2005, 21:45:40 »
I got a real annoying problem... My key won't stay in position to keep the engine running !!!  The car starts and runs just fine... but it's gotten to the point that I gotta hold the key in position or it springs to the off position... kinda makes driving with the 4 speed a challenge.  For a while you could get it to catch, but today it would spring off if I hit a bump at 1st, and by the time I got home it wouldn't stay on at all....  I need help !!!

Hello Lou,
There is a plastic switching unit at the rear of the ignition/steering lock assembly. It sounds like yours is defective. This plastic switching unit can be replaced without removing the whole ignition assembly but unfortunatly the speedometer may have to be removed to access it. Three small screws hold it to the back of the assembly.

There are at least two versions of this plastic switching unit depending on the year of your W113. My parts book shows two versions early # 000 462 0693 and late # 000 462 17 93. Your parts suppliers should be able to refer to your vin # for the correct switch. Sedans of the era used the same parts.

I can add more details or photos as needed.

Good Luck,
