1967 250SL up for auction at Mecum Monterey

  Some vehicles out there - especially motorcycles - command a higher price if they are ex-police. No idea why, and myself - I would not want one.
Police vehicles usually have a huge amount of hours idling. use that is not reflected in the mileage.

For those that appreciate the differences in early vs late cars this car is very desirable as it's and Early 250 with a Manual trans.   To those that don't understand or care about the differences, it's just another pagoda.

Does this car have an added Cruise Control? -- look at the Signal Indicator lever on left of steering wheel, there is another lever there that resembles a later cruise control.

Of course there are other modifications as we see two knobs in the center console between the seats that this early car would not have and we see parts in the engine compartment that are clearly added - maybe external ignition box or such.

I would imagine those center console knobs are for the additional fog lights and rear brake light.  I have no idea what the added lever on steering stalk is for.  I would have thought if it were for cruise control that would have been mentioned. 

My question is what is a Becker Corona radio??  Is it actually a Europa that was misread?   

I’ll be at Monterey this weekend, and I’m going to try to find this car and check it out in person.

I just happened to be at Mecum yesterday and took a look at this Pagoda. I must admit that the photographs don't look too bad (but check out the trunk fit). The engine bay is pretty much a mess, again when you look up close. The top is either a replacement or repainted. The data plate indicates it would be the same color as the car (as the hubcaps would indicate). The fender notches are not present.

I noticed the extra lever by the steering column, it appears to be a transplanted cruise control from the late 70s or early 80s.

Radio is a Europa.

I have noticed the cars look always 70-80% better on pictures than in reality. Just another reason to go and take a look if thinking seriously of purchase.

Pictures help flawed cars compared to in person.  In person is better than pictures for superior cars.

That said, I'd say the 250 SL example was obviously flawed.

I saw it too and I’m in agreement with Johnny B’s accurate assessment.  At 20 feet, I thought it looked  nice although the color was just off. I guess it was dark green (268) and the first one in that color that I’ve seen so hard to evaluate. The closer one get, the issues start to reveal themselves.  I wonder what it actually went for?

If that was gavel price, it cost the buyer slightly more.  I’m uncertain what Mecum’s buyers premium is.  I’d say that was fair and in line with what is selling on BaT for w113s in similar condition.   I’d love to hear from others more knowledgeable in case I’m off base.

The buyer doesn't pay the seller's commission. He pays the buyer's premium. I think it is at 12%.

With buyers premium, it sold for $64,064 plus taxes and license fees.

Mecum sold prices on their website are shown inclusive of buyer's premium. Buyer's premium for Mecum is 10% if attending in person, or 12% if bidding via internet or phone.

The sold price shown is $57,200 indicating it had a hammer price of $52,000.
