What is correct tailpipe finisher for 220seb coupe/cab
« on: June 13, 2020, 22:18:17 »
I would to put the correct tailpipe finisher on my 1963 220seb coupe.

I have never actually seen a correct example on a car.

I think the outlet is rectangular.
Part numbers believed to be:
111 49 20 314
111 49 20 414
111 49 20 514
111 49 20 614

Can anyone verify?

Boy I would sure love to see an "in the wrapper" time capsuled all original "museum quality" if it ever existed 220seb coupe or cabriolet.

Not sure if there is such an original one out there.

There are so many unique beautiful features of the W111 220seb that the other W111 coupes and cabs don't have.

Many Thanks

I've had two of them. A '64 and a '67 250SE.  My next project will be a 1970 3.5 coupe.

I can't help you with the exhaust treatment but it may be in my parts book.

Peter,

I have two attached brochures. One clearly shows an oval shape. The other is less obvious but looks to be the same. I have also seen actual pictures of the oval tip. Not really sure what is correct for the single exhaust tailpipe. My W128 '60 Ponton coupe uses a large round exhaust tip and that may have transferred as well. Might contact the Classic Center and see what they say.

I agree about the features of the early cars. I am transitioning the best of that to my '68 280SE. My Ponton coupe has those features albeit a bit different. So I can definitely appreciate those.

Hi Wallace.
You are always so helpful. The pictures you posted are not only helpful. They are awesome.
I was offered the following type of tip which I need to verify my OD on the time valve outlet.
This looks like something you might see on a W112 300se?? Or something earlier.
Trying to make a decision.
Love the 220seb details.
My car is not perfect but it is really standing tall and super clean and rust free.
Had a good life.
I want to put on something that is right if at all possible.

Do you have two pipes exiting at the back or just one?

I have those tips and I believe are the tips for the twin pipe system on later cars. I am pretty sure the 220Seb just has the single tail pipe. I don’t know for sure, but would assume the single pipe is larger diameter than the pipes of the twin pipe arrangement. The single chrome tip on my Ponton 220SE coupe is much bigger the W111 280SE coupe’s twin pipe size.

BTW, these tips divert the exhaust gas down instead of allowing it to go straight out as the originals. I have the original “straight shot” on the W111 now but will use the diverter ones at some point. Having the exhaust soot blow up on the bumper and tail light annoys me.

I have those on my 1969 280SE Coupe withe exhaust directed downward so as not to cause corrosion on the chrome bumpers

Here is a photo of my exhaust tip, which I believe to be correct for a 63 220SE Cab/Coupe.  It is oval in shape.

Bingo! That is the tip. I looked on EPC and that number matches up. Only place I can see  that they sell it is in Germany https://mercedesclubs.de/onlinekatalog/5-lagerbestand-neuteile/368-1114920314

I have bought parts from them, so I would try to contact them. They are a club in Germany but remake several parts that are NLA.

Good luck!

That is the one.
I need to see if it will work on a Time Valve exhaust outlet which is just a touch over 2 inch OD

VDH in Germany is showing the part sold out, but now that you have the part number check with MB, EBay and the other usual sources.  The tail pipe of replacement mufflers may indeed require a modification since they seem a tad larger than the originals.  Once fitted, the chrome end piece is secured with a self tapping screw.

I am not sure about this.  MB part numbers starting with "111" generally indicate use on the W111 cars.  Also the VHD website list this particular end piece as having been used on these models: "111.014, 111.021. 111.023 112.014".

Yes, this part also fits W112 cars. If you just cannot find that part, I would be willing to bet that the exhaust tip for the 220SE Pontons will fit. #000 492 05 14, but it is round.

If you really want to get crazy, I know of an oval exhaust tip but it is for a ......Mopar. I have these on my '70 Roadrunner. Ok, too crazy. But just looking on-line, there are tons of exhaust tips and I bet you could find one that is reasonably close and has a pipe inlet that would work.

Good luck.

If someone has an original example and they would be willing to send it for use as a pattern then I could have some made.
I'm sure there are other owners like me who would love to have the right original look.

I just received the 1 and only 220seb NOS OEM tip that I could find.
I am will post thickness and ID when I get a chance to get my measuring calipers at my shop.
The ID is much bigger than the OD of my Time Valve stainless muffler outlet.
I am looking into having Mike make some of these.
If it's possible we would more than likely make them to work with his system.
I believe the original rear muffler is NLA.
The finisher is quite a piece of history.
Does anyone have one of these on their 220?

That is cool! Where did you find this? That is good to get the dimensions to someone who can replicate it in the future.

I am fully aware of how frustrating it is to find parts that are NLA. Between the W111 coupe and the W128 220SE Ponton coupe (only made 800), I have had my share. I have managed to make some of the parts myself and sell the extras to other car guys. Most have been for the Ponton cars. I am now working on the rubber drive coupling for the power windows that is between the gear head and the electric motor on the pre '69 cars. After 50+ years, those are starting to fail.

Wallace, I got mine from Ebay.  They still come up for sale from time to time.  I paid Euro 140 last fall.  The ID is 55mm and I had to drill 2 holes into the repro exhaust in order to mount the piece with 2 metal screws.  If you are looking closely at period photos, the oval end piece is the correct one.
