Found these in the trunk of a 69 I bot today, is the stamped in MERCEDES BENZ typical?

No, somewhat unusual.

Couldn't let mrfatboy get ahead of me on this. I checked what I have and sure enough, one had the "Mercedes Benz" stamped in. Picture included, with the original wax paper wrapper...

The technical manual describes the correct pliers for the Pagoda, I always thought that a tool pre 1990 would be stamped West Germany or W Germany ,post 1990 stamped Germany .

I went to take a look at a sampling of the tools I have. There does not appear to be any consistency on the use of "West Germany" or "Germany" most are stamped with "Germany" - the Heyco pliers I have have "Germany" molded into the metal handle. As noted in the photo, I also have some that have the engraving.

The "Made in Germany" id was always just that, never W Germany or West Germany. Can't say anything about the stamping on the tools, though.

If you go outside the tools trade you'll find that the location identification becomes important, for example, when you look for pottery items. When Germany became divided into the BDR and DDR many eastern porcelain manufacturers built new factories in the west but had to identify the products made there as such.

I was not clear in my post. When I looked at the tools I had in my "stash" I did have some (wrenches and pliers) that were marked as West Germany, W. Germany and Western Germany.

Yes, there are tools marked that. I was referring to the moniker "Made in Germany". I was born there and lived there for 36 years and never saw anything marked "Made in West Germany". Must not have looked right.

Didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for "Made in Germany" vs. "Made in West[ern] Germany". There are a number of ceramic and porcelain stamps that are the latter--just look them up. Cameras such as Leica, Voightlander and Kodak AG all say just "Made in Germany" even when it was very much West Germany.

One of the most notable of the "East German" cameras of the 1950s and 60s was the Exacta. That was only marked "Ihagee Dresden" indicating the company and location. Their lenses were often marked "Carl Zeiss Jena" until the West German firm Zeiss got upset and then they were marked just Jena or Jena-Optik.

So you'll see both...on a variety of things.

I've seen 190SL's with a tag that says " Made in West Germany " so it must have been a thing for MB for a while at least.

“Those from the east” stole a lot of tooling for many products immediately postwar. What they didn’t steal they copied. They were even known for copying before the war. Totally shameless. I say “from the east” because it’s too easy to annoy and offend even when the guilty are well known. You can look at the link below. The quality of cameras from Leica, Contax, Voightlander, and other German manufacturers was very consistent and well-known. The copies from all those who shall not be named were all over the map, some of them comically bad and some of them quite good—but stolen designs and copies nonetheless.

Probably not, lol.
It used to be my Dads camera. He loved it and it was probably the only one he could afford at the time. It’s one of the few things I kept as a memory, doesn’t matter what it’s worth.
