Could someone post a picture?
« on: October 07, 2020, 20:45:10 »
Hi,
Trying to figure out what screws hold the 2 chrome strips on either side of the trunk lock?  Can anyone post a picture of the screws?

The spare parts list shows: DIN 7981 lens head screw  2.9 x 6 mm
I'll look for a photo later and add it.

Hi Shvegel-----no screws---held at both ends by tail lght surround, and trunk lock,   but
if you look under you will  see a screw hole at both ends, just  left side of the gas cap---at right end,
and one  just right of the  SL badge, but on mine no screws in those holes   so did not fit  screws in to there.
so any body let me know if there are screws  in yours,.regards.
Perhaps mine does not line up with hole,----will take a look tonight, regards.

Mine has no screws.
Left side has large hole near the lock and one rivet at the end away from the lock.
Right side is the same, except mine has an extra screw added by PO(?)

There is one screw for each trim piece. On 280SL there should also be a thin rubber pad behind the trim; see photos by Douglas here:

I think the rubber pad behind the chrome pieces and tail lights came to later 280sl’s. JonB found the change in one of his parts books. Maybe he can chime in with date and vin.

I was also told by Dave Gallon that my Aug 68 280sl did not come with the rubber trim.

Now, TylerS 250 has the rubber trim. Best guess at the moment is that it was added later to protect from water intrusion. Hence the MB change.

I did put the rubber pieces in ( this is how I got all this info) because I think it does look nice and if it protects from water intrusion so much the better. It just depends if you are a stickler for ABSOLUTE originality. 🤣

have just replaced this chrome on my 1970 280SL. No screws --- currently this piece is held at both ends by tail lght surround, and trunk lock. wedges in approx. 1cm on each side.

hope this helps.
