Aluminium parts protection
« on: December 18, 2020, 17:21:24 »
Dear all,

The restoration of my Pagoda 230SL is going to the next stage.
The engine is disassembled, few corroded aluminum parts fixes (see pictures and give you opinion please)
All aluminum parts blasted with fine glass beads. They look like new after blasting and I would like to protect them for future tarnish.
Of course I want the have show /concourse effect. ;-)
So, I decided to protect them with clear 75% glossy high class auto coat from DuPont and the final look don’t make me happy (attached pictures). The parts became little bit darker than raw aluminum and I believe this is not correct look for a concourse.
Most probably will blast them again, but my question is how to preserve engine aluminum parts in order to have original look?
I found in forum discussion about layering with Nyalic - special clear coat protectant, withstand temperatures till 177 C. I found it in UK, but still not ordered.
What is your opinion about Nyalic, should it change the color after apply?
How the preserve exhaust manifold ? It is cast iron and must the applied with something else more temperature resistant. Any suggestions?
Best Regards from Bulgaria
Ivan

It has been sitting ok on my engine a couple of years now. I do not see any adverse effects.

But I did not apply it on exhaust manifold.

Dear Pawel
thanks for reply
You applied the parts exactly with Nyalic?
Is it change the color of bare aluminum parts after applying?
How do you apply it? Did you use it as spray or can for spaying gun? I found some Nyalic preparation materials as degreaser and rinser. Did you use them before spaying?

Hi Ivan,

I used Motip 04033 (heat resistant 800 C) clear lacquer.
You do not see it, no color change, perfect.

Ivan,

yes, I applied Nyalic striaght on the parts. The parts need to be thoroughly cleaned. As one of the Members instructed me - what is there, will stay there. I did not notice any aluminum colour change, nor any other parts colour change.

I applied the Nyalic straight form the spray tin. You may want to experiment with various means and various application methods on leftover parts. I think I am going to try the mentioned Motip varnish.

One thing to watch out for: Nyalic dissolves paint on parts for a moment. You can not touch them for a few minutes - then they stay intact and nothing is seen. I have not observed this on body paint, but I did notice it on parts painted with e.g. aluminum colour paint such as the wiper motor.

I think the Members fornm the UK are the most experienced ones in the use of Nyalic.
