Two new issues
« on: March 01, 2021, 18:47:54 »
My 1969 280SL, with only 45,000 original miles, has developed two new problems. 1. Difficult hot starts. When the engine is cold it starts right up and runs like a top. Once the engine is hot, if I shut the engine off, it's difficult to start it back up. 2. Automatic transmission does not seem to hold in Park. It slips out of gear. Any suggestions or solutions on either problem would be welcomed.
Thanks

John

Most likely the shifter rod bushings are falling apart causing the parking lock problem. With a low mileage car like yours, I would check the electrical fuses since a corroded fuse could disable your starting aids. Otherwise a starting aid relay, most likely needs it's electrical contacts cleaned. Check
and "twist" each fuse first to rule a fuse problem out.

Thank you Joe. I replaced the shifter bushings but the problem, although not as bad, still exists. The car seems to shift out of park, or for example, into 4th to 3rd, on its own.
