Under Dash Panels
« on: January 30, 2021, 02:54:35 »
I want to make and install the panels under the dash on my 1966 230SL.  I never had the originals so I don’t have them as templates for the new ones.  Does someone have a template or drawing of what they look like?
And how do they install?  Are they screwed into position with upholstery screws?

Thanks,
Harry

As for attaching the panels:

Fitting in the front far end:
1. Both on the driver's and passenger's sides foot wells have kind of "hook" on the firewall - the firewall ends of the panels rest against them
2. The middle panel just slides in between the heater and carpet on the tunnel

Fitting in the dash end
1. You may want to check in the threads (a lot was written about it), but if I remember correctly for 230SL it is the screws, for late cars it was the clips

Check it out here:

I would glue sound insulation (felt or foam) on those panels, particularly the side ones.

Thanks so much to everyone.  I'm excited to find that this information is readily available here on the forum.  What a great asset this is!

Does anyone have a tamplate for early type panel, manual transmission? In tech. section there is only late style...

I’m not sure but I think the only difference is the cutout for the different steering columns between early and late cars. You will just have to check.

See attached picture. If you add back in the section outlined in red it might work. I would suggest testing with a piece of cardboard to make sure or make refinements.
