First Pagoda - “Running” rich
« on: March 02, 2021, 22:29:50 »
Dear all,

I am very new to the Pagoda world and would kindly ask for your advice/guidance on how to get my 1966 230SL back on the road.

To make a long story short; I recently purchased a very original car in France and got it shipped to Denmark.

I am very pleased with the original condition of the car, but the car sat for nearly 10 years and on this basis I am currently trying to sort out all mechanics starting with fuel linkage.

Prior owner did the brakes and steering so some things were up to speed all ready when I purchased the car.

After taking ownership I changed the following parts to get her fired up:

- Original distributor changed to Electronical 123 distributor.
- New sparkplugs & wires
- replaced Thermostat
- all new fuel lines and fuel tank
- Fuel pump exhanged to a Pierburg 7.214400 while restoring the original

After replacing the above I got the engine running - no idle but she fired up nicely and i did get my first drive in the court yard!

When getting warmed up the engine dies again..

Having read a lot about problems with the Injection Pump (Especially after sitting) I took the valves out and checked the pistons (they were all moving). After having put things back together the engine is now not able to start.

If I look at my new spark plugs car seems to be running rich?? Could it be the replacement fuel pump bringing too much fuel?

What would be my next step?

All suggestions/help will be appriciated,

Michael

It looks like your plugs have been fouled. Will the car start again with a new set of plugs or at least clean the ones you have?

Once you get it started again, turn it off or you will foul them again.

Now start the process of finding out why the car is running rich. Linkage needs adjustment, Leaky CSV, Stuck WRD, loose BC, poorly adjusted FIP, etc.

Do a search on these issues. Plenty of info on them. They are common problems. I think this is the 3rd type of post in the last week😃

Return back here with more info so we can advise next steps.

It takes a lot of cranking of the starter to fill those long injection pump lines with fuel. Crack open the fittings at the injectors, remove the spark plugs, and crank the engine until fuel emerges from all six of the injection lines at the injectors. You can hold the accelerator pedal down while priming the lines. As fuel emerges go ahead and tighten each fitting until all are primed. Install a fresh set of spark plugs and it should start.
