Data Card Interpretation

Ed -- That seems correct to me; but I've had this same concern too.  I mean, considering there were so few cars built in calendar year 1971 there have always seemed to be a lot of people with 280SLs registered as '71.  (including me).

But when I asked my MB mechanic to research this for me he in essence came up with the same info Klaus did.

What is the VIN of your '71?

Your car is a '70 one. My '68 datacard is different, there is more boxes in the lover part that I can't read.
Has somebody a '68 card's foto? Thanks a lot.

I have a photo, but I have never been able to post pictures - somehow too stupid for that.

Klaus, Thank you very much for your list. Now I understand what are these numbers.
A last question: what are the "front axles left and right"? On which part do I find these numbers. I have the same number (318) in the two boxes.

Alain, if you still have the Parts Picture Catalog that came with the car; I have Catalog "B" 1968; the location of this number on the axle assembly is shown in a drawing on page 6. These numbers are "Aggregate-Nummern", version numbers for the axles, identifiers to enable the owner or mechanic to order the correct spare parts.

On my 230SL data card, I believe boxes 12 and 19 are L. and R. front axle numbers and are mine are six digits and each is different (190098 and 190093).  To find the numbers on the car, look on the back of the king pin assembly, near the center grease point on that part.
