280sl rear axle trailing bushing tool
« on: March 24, 2021, 23:32:17 »
How in the world do you get the rear axle trailing arm front bushing which is installed on the trailing arm mounted to the car? I don't have the tapered tool that I saw when searching though this site. Is there any place to get one?

I made my own. Pretty easy to do.

If you don't have the tool it will be more difficult. However try using some plastic wire ties to hold the bushing in place in the trailing arm before you move it onto the mount. You can use some soap and water, or something like Armorall to lubricate the mount and rubber bushing to make installation easier also. Do not use any grease or oil.

Well after brain storming I came up with a simple jury rigging. A floor jack, piece of 2x4, and the fixing nut from the forward drive shaft.

You should really get into the habit of always having a piece of wood between your axle stand and the car so as not to damage the underseal or distort the panel.

Very good point I will do that first thing when I get back into the garage. Never thought about that, thanks.

One can also find plastic, rubber or urethane pads to fit most styles of jack stands.
