Door rainwater gutter
« on: April 14, 2005, 07:10:44 »
As I talked about with Naj at the Techno Classica Essen there where at both doorsides missing the rear water gutters of my car. Naj was surprised there were gutters at all, he didn't have them, so I was thinking maybe it's something that after restoring isn't replaced because it has no real purpose and nobody will notice after all. I looked up the parts# and is indeed described as wasserablaufschiene hinten 113 725 0768 or 0868. Anyone noticed the same missing of those parts?

Aah!! Paul,
Now that I know what they look like, they are indeed on my cars.

This picture shows the rear one. They actually fit with the two window channels.

Question is: once water enters the door cavity, how does it get drained out? All the holes at the bottom of the door are plugged up by the lower trim clips.

Not my door.  There are holes, more like slots, at the very bottom for water to drain out of.  If you've got your door back together, lay on the ground and look up at the bottom of your door.

I'll have a look at the weekend, Rodd.
It will be weeks before the doors are back together.
Where are the slots: inner edge or outer, towards the front or rear?

OK, Naj.  I just went out and looked and can't find them!  I was going by memory from 4 years ago.  Where I expected to find them was near the outer edge of the bottom, but that's where the rubber door seal is fixed.  Now I don't know what to tell you about door drains!   :?

Two weekends ago I finally did the big window guide job!  (That is, dismantle the doors, remove the windows and re-epoxy the guides to them, clean and lube everything, reinstall and adjust the windows, make and attach new plastic moisture barriers, etc.)

During the cleaning phase I specifically looked for these water drains, to make sure that they were not blocked.  My memory is that they were 2 small slits on the outside edge of the door bottom (door floor), tucked up against the outer door skin, near the middle of the door.  They were hard to see even from inside without a flashlight shining up from below.

On mine, if I can recall (it was just yeterday   ) -- the drain slits were very close to where the plastic balls of the aluminum trim pop through the door.

[Paul,

I just replaced my drivers door and both the old and new one have the aluminum channels you show.  They attach to the window guide channels.  I don't know what the #'s are though I'm sure you can find them.  Check w/ Passarelli's in Cave Creek AZ.  I'll bet he has some good used ones. Good luck,

Found the door drain holes.
There are 7, around each of the (round ball) lower trip clips:

I'm still confused as to exactly where the "door rainwater gutters" (those in Pablo's photos) go.

Tom,
In this picture, the clean aluminum channel-like part is the rear rain gutter. Behind it (not visible) is a steel channel in which the bottom glass guide runs.
There is a similar one inside the front edge of the door.

The front one can (just about) be seen in the bottom left corner of the door:
