Does anyone know what this is?  It’s like fine grain particle board material.

Apparently late 1966 230SL 4-spd manual (Italian Version)
Owned since 1987 and wrapping up a full rotisserie restoration/modernization.
Was: Papyrus White 717G with Turquoise MBtex 112 and Kinderseat
Is: Dark Blue 332G with Dark Blue Leather (5300, I think)

From memory 🤪🤪 it sort of looks like the reinforcement pieces for the left and right dash parts. Used on the both left & right A pillars.

I don't remember seeing this piece in the 1964 or the 1966 230SL
Could be a shim put underneath the the wood pieces on the window?
The hole distance could fit the studs for the blue nuts.

I agree.  I spent a lot of time working in that area.  I don't remember ever handling that piece.  It could be that it fell out when I was removing the woodwork.  It's one of those "FAIRYSNUCKiT" parts.  The parts fairy snuck it into my parts box when I wasn't looking.  I'll look if I can get in there to see.  It reminds me of a piece screwed to the door frame to stop the rubber sleeved window counter balance spring from rattling, but it's not the right shape or size.  Thanks mrfatboy and Alfred.

Tom,
keep in mind that these shim pieces are not standard and present in all 230SL.
When I opened the door panel on my 1964 230SL I noticed a small shim piece at the edge of the panel. Never seen that before.
Another but more common piece is the one glued by "96" to the panel in the center to protect it from the screw.

They were probably used as needed by the installer.

Considering the high number of weekly changes during the first 9 months of production I would not really call it "random" but "efficient".
Keeping the assembly line moving while trying to adjust two trim parts perfectly required some extra pieces and ingenuity.  ;)
