What to do .... What to do???

HI All,
New to the forum, mostly looking around and getting info. A bunch of help getting a data card and keys for a 1965 230sl 4 speed.
So here is the issue. I bought a building and the car was in it. The old owner had let it sit for 26 years and "was" supposed to get it out within 10 days... After 3.5 years I am now legal titled owner of said car! The short story is the last owner seems to have just lost his interest in the vehicle. All in all not what I wanted to happen but, also couldn't have it take up any more space. Now this is not my first Mercedes. I sold an 86 560sl just before covid hit.
I thought I was going to "do something" with the newly acquired 230sl.
And here is the issue. I have read, talked with a few, listened and now I am reaching out to the group in trying to figure out if:
1) I should put some money into it to sell?
2) It may seem easy enough but I've heard that some people would rather take it "as is" and don't start it so whom ever does buy it does it THEIR WAY.
3) Others have told me to make sure it runs and drives for an easier sale but after sitting for 26 years inside a heated building....where does one STOP?

The motor does turn over and the old owner says it ran when his son parked it last when he used in for senior prom in 1995!
The engine compartment looks extremely clean, new exhaust with paper stickers still on it and oil still looks great.
So yes I am selling it but .... I don't want to hurt it in any way .... just completely confused as what to do?
Any insight would be much appreciated and would help this old girl find a new home correctly.

Speaking as a lifelong mechanic I think you are always in a better position selling something that runs.  Having it turn over is half the battle so buying a new battery and shooting a video is well worth it.

Hello Chris,

To begin, be sure to proceed with caution. Of course, you know that you should have followed advice given to you by members here to purchase something that runs. This would have given you a chance to evaluate or have someone tell you what needs to be done to make the car roadworthy. However, that is water under the bridge as the saying goes.

Whatever you do, do NOT attempt to start the car in its present condition. I say this for you have no idea right now what harm you will do that would result in very costly repairs.

If I was in your shoes I would proceed as follows;-

A) Find members in your area that actually own a Pagoda. Once you do you can find out from them what shop they use for services of their Pagoda. You can do this as follows.

- post a New Topic simply asking a question what shop or mechanic Members use in your area of residence.

- you can check this by using Google to find a European Shop in your area or nearest city.

- Another way would be to see how many Full Members this site has in your area of residence is to check out the "Members" Menu Option above as follows;

1 - Click on Members
2 - click on View the memberlist
3 - In the Spreadsheet click on Location in the Headings of the table

The listing is now alphabetically sorted by Location. In order to find your area page thru the pages until you find your area, then you can post a Private Message (PM) to another Member with your question.

B) Once you find a shop you can communicate with them how to proceed. I think they would advise you to have the car towed to there shop so they may proceed to inspect your car before trying to start it after such a long time not having run. I assume they would;-

Drain all fluids, oil and replace it (engine and transmission oil, brake fluid, gasoline.
use a borescope to inspect the gas tank for rust (if rust is found this must be addressed first before starting the engine). Turn the engine over by hand and listen to the engine and transmission with an automotive stethoscope while the engine is being turned over by hand for unusual noises.
After that, the shop will provide you with further steps.

C) Once the shop gets your car to run they will be able to give you a fairly good idea (ask for a report with an approximate cost for each item that needs to be addressed; This report and the inspection may cost you $150- to $200- it will be money well spent. This then will help you to sell the car or keep this wonderful automobile for yourself.

Just sell it to someone who will put it back into service.
If you want to get top dollar, then best to do all the re-commissioning yourself, after studying all the advice on how to do that. It will take a lot of work. Or, pay a mechanic to do all that, but then you will share s ome of the proceeds with that mechanic (or garage).
But if max net proceeds is not your objective, then sell it as-is. I am sure there are many willing buyers for the right price.

Since you clearly want to sell the car, my advice would be to get the car to a qualified mechanic and spend a few dollars to find out what you have.  Once you know that, ether dump it "as is" or spend a few more dollars to prepare the car for sale based on it's known condition.  Only when you know what you have can you begin to establish a value range to market the car.

Unless you have someone you know closer, Black Forest, in Glendale, WI could be a good shop to work with.

This is as close (Glendale) as you are going to get for someone who knows these cars intimately.

Beware the old mantra: "There is nothing so costly as an inexpensive Mercedes-Benz".

You could easily spend many hundreds just for a good look-see, and thousands to get it in barely running condition. A car sitting for 26 years is going to need a LOT of mechancial work to make it road worthy.

This is good to know, since if you have NO INTEREST in this yourself, best to simply get rid of it as a project car for someone who is interested.

Hi All,
VERY Much appreciate everyone's input. I am mulling all and relooking to see if I want to take it on. It isn't a money thing its a time thing. Just don't want another sitting in the garage that takes years to get to it.
I know better then to start it but appreciate the insight.
And thanks much Norm for the link to Blackforest! I have heard of them and have a guy on Oak Creek that is very good. I am currently talking with him about next steps...IF I take them.

All in all I really like all the responses and will keep the thread updated once I figure out what I'm doing.
