Engine Transplants on MB
« on: January 26, 2005, 07:17:50 »
Some of you have heard me talk about Motorwerks (a local independent) and its owner, Satish Tumalla.  He plays around with his own cars too.  If anyone is interested in the story of his recent engine transplant, read this:

Mike,

Quite an impressive project, not only the car, which is awesome, but the level of detail in documenting what was done, and all the hoops that had to be jumped through!

I stopped into MotorWerks today and that 560SEC, now has a V12 in it.
And Satish was also working on a V8 transplant into a 94 E320 coupe, really cool stuff :D  :D  :D  There was also a 300SL roadster sitting in the back of the shop.

Well Norton, that's OLD news, and its MotorWerks, by the way.  The V12 conversion was completed WEEKS ago.  Heck, if you'd join the MBCA you could have come to the Tech Session there on 6-April.  You would have seen the Ilson Engineering racing motors built under the MB name for Penske.  750 HP in a supercharged V6, 2.3L now that's cool.  But you might not like those motors...they idle at 2,000 RPM, cruise at 12,000 and redline at 16,000!  But I'll agree with you those RPM's take their toll, those engines are good for 500 miles and that's it.[:0]

BTW that V12 in Satish's W126 is, oh, the 4th engine.  Original, an AMG, a larger V8, and now the V12.  When will it ever end??? :D

The 300SL roadster belongs to his architect David Millins; he designed the Motorwerks building.  He (Millins) also owns a really cool Hatch & Sons restored 280SE which might have been there as well...it was last week, at least.  Did you look behind the Diablo?  The Testarossa?  Satish had about 20 of his coupe buddies show up at that Tech Session; also, there was the One Lap of America car sponsored by TireRack and MotorWerks--a C55 AMG--owned by 26 year old Faisal Ahmed who is third driver.  Primary driver is Jim Crider, successful local SCCA racer usually found in a Mustang Cobra on the track...

There will be some of these mentioned cars and others on display at the Gemutlekeit Concours which is being held in concert with Eyes on Design.  Sunday June 26th at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate in Grosse Pointe...

Well thanks for the correction Mike, I guess I should check with you before I post. And I am and have been a MBCA member for some time now, I just don't like going to the meetings for some reason.

Ohhh, Mike--you don't need to check with me before you post!  But if anybody is looking for MotorWerks, on the internet or in the "yellow pages", they won't find it with an incorrect spelling--simple as that!  Trust me on this, as I've made that mistake myself, and now I know better.

Sorry for the error on the MBCA, but you told me that you let your membership lapse.  And, since you were very impressed with the Motorwerks shop, you would have been even more impressed with it on the day of the Tech Session, which was somewhat like a "well stocked" open house.
