So I’m contemplating changing the prop shaft center bearing bushing as it’s hardened and the bearing moves about - thudding at times.
My 230SL has an enclosed tunnel where the prop shaft sits unlike the pictures I’ve seen on this forum where the prop shaft looks more easily accessible. Maybe 280SL? Is anybody familiar with the enclosed type of tunnel on 230SL?
It looks like either I have to drop the gearbox or drop the entire rear axle in order to get the prop shaft out either through the front or through the rear.
I recall from my clutch change a couple of years ago that I did try to pull the prop shaft out the front just as an exercise and I seem to recall the engine was in the way and I was telling myself that if I ever needed to pull the prop shaft I’d be in deep trouble. My memory is hazy now and I can’t be sure. I think the shaft can’t be removed from the front of the engine is still in the car.
I was wondering if there anyone who has the enclosed tunnel 230SL chassis and has encountered this issue before.
